How does SolarEdge SafeDC work?

Row of white SolarEdge power optimizers mounted on a wall, with red and black cables running beneath. The setup appears organized and technical.

How SafeDC from SolarEdge works

SafeDC is a panel-level integrated safety function that drastically reduces the risk of electric shock and fire hazards. This technology is standard in SolarEdge power optimizers, ensuring that during installation, maintenance, or emergencies, the voltage is automatically reduced to a safe level.

When a string is not yet connected to the inverter or when the inverter is turned off, the power optimizers automatically drop the output voltage to just 1 volt per panel. This keeps the total string voltage well below the danger level for electric shock — even for longer strings.

SafeDC provides automatic shutdown in the following cases:

  • During installation, as long as the string is disconnected or the inverter is turned off.
  • During maintenance or emergencies, for example, if the inverter is manually switched off or the building is disconnected from the grid.
  • In case of overheating, when the sensors inside an optimizer detect a temperature above 85°C.

Thanks to this smart shutdown feature, SafeDC not only ensures safety for installers and first responders, but also complies with international safety standards such as NEC 2017 (US) and VDE AR-E 2100-712 (Germany).
