What should I look out for when choosing cables and connectors?

Close-up of hands working with a Solen cable

For optimal performance of a PV system, it is important to use high-quality solar cable in combination with the correct PV connectors.

  • When choosing cables and connectors, the solar cable should have the following characteristics:
  • UV-resistant;
  • Easy to handle and install on the roof;
  • Double insulated and with the lowest possible resistance.

Solen Cable

The cable we supply is from Solen, specifically designed for PV systems. We strongly advise against using flexible or solid single-insulated vinyl wire cables. These are not suitable for high DC voltages or prolonged outdoor use in sunlight.

Staübli Multicontact Connectors

For the high-quality connectors we supply from Staübli Multicontact, there are also a few important requirements: use solar cables of 4 or 6 mm², as these connectors are not suitable for 2.5 mm². Always crimp the male and female contacts using the proper dedicated crimping tool. We often see contacts squeezed with combination pliers or similar tools—this will not result in a reliable connection. Keep in mind that the power running through these connectors can easily be 14 Amps × 1000 Volts = 14 kW. If the connection is poor, it will heat up and the connector may melt. In the worst-case scenario, this melted connector could be in contact with the roof structure.
