What is AFIR?

AFIR (Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation) is a regulation to ensure that electric drivers can easily and reliably recharge their vehicles. This law was proposed in 2021 by the European Commission as part of the Fit for 55 package. It encourages the development of a comprehensive alternative fuels infrastructure, with a focus on electric vehicle charging stations.

Changes to Alfen’s EV products

Currently, Alfen is leading the way in complying with AFIR standards with their charging solutions. The charging stations comply with AFIR standards with enhanced user interfaces and security measures. For example, they support electronic payments and offer easy access and full transparency in pricing. With the ‘Direct Payment Solutions’ licence per charging station, you can remotely enable dynamic QR codes and price displays. These on-screen QR codes ensure secure and clear payments and also work with existing payment terminals via a Charge Point Management System (CPMS).

AFIR emphasises transparency; therefore, charging stations clearly display pricing information, per kWh and per charging session. In addition, they support smart charging, which contributes to energy efficiency and the integration of electric vehicles into the smart grid. These features promote digital connectivity and sustainability according to AFIR rules. Alfen thus helps ensure a smooth transition to the new standards by providing safe, transparent and efficient charging solutions for electric vehicles.

The impact of AFIR

For Alfen’s B2B customers, AFIR offers significant benefits. Compliance with EU regulations ensures that charging solutions meet the latest requirements and are prepared for the growing demand for electric vehicles. In addition, compliance with AFIR standards provides a competitive advantage with more sales and market opportunities. They are better prepared to meet the rising demand of EV drivers for accessible charging solutions. This accelerates electric vehicle adoption and contributes to the environment by mitigating climate change.

EV drivers also benefit from AFIR. The legislation enables subscription-free payments, with QR codes for charging stations under 50 kW simplifying the payment process. EV drivers can count on a wider network of charging stations both locally and along main roads, facilitating long journeys and holidays. Furthermore, AFIR provides clear cost information upfront, allowing drivers to better budget and compare charging rates. Moreover, AFIR requires charging station operators to provide information on availability and waiting times, improving the user experience.

AFIR: The Future of Electric Driving in Europe

The introduction of AFIR marks an important step towards sustainable and accessible electric driving in Europe. From 2025, AFIR will mandate fast-charging stations along major highways every 60 kilometres within the EU. The Alfen Twin 5 Plus fully complies with these new standards. In addition, the Eve Single Pro-line and Eve Double Pro-line have been updated to the latest AFIR standard with firmware update 6.6. These updates ensure that Alfen’s charging solutions are ready for the future of electric driving.
