Zaptec Sense: smart charging with control

Electric charging places increasing demands on the available energy capacity in homes, apartment complexes, and commercial buildings. Especially when multiple devices are using electricity at the same time, it is important that the charging process is properly aligned with the capacity of the electrical installation. Zaptec Sense was developed to manage this automatically. The module works together with the smart meter, reads the current energy consumption, and adjusts the charging speed of the charging station accordingly.

Smart use of available energy

When electricity consumption in the building is low, Zaptec Sense can increase the charging speed. This ensures that the available capacity is used optimally and that the vehicle is charged more quickly. If consumption increases, for example because household appliances, machines, or multiple charging points are active at the same time, Zaptec Sense automatically reduces the charging power. In this way, the module helps prevent overload and keeps fuses protected.

For customers with their own energy generation, Zaptec Sense offers additional possibilities. Zaptec is introducing support for charging electric vehicles using self-generated solar energy. This feature is being rolled out gradually in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, and Luxembourg, and is currently available for home installations with a TN grid configuration. The feature is available for the Zaptec Go 2 and the Zaptec Pro. To use it, you need either a Zaptec Sense P1 or a Zaptec Sense Generic.

If the customer already has an installation with a Zaptec Sense P1 or Generic, activation can easily be requested through the Zaptec app. Zaptec will then check the installation and prepare a firmware update for the Zaptec Sense. Once the update has been completed and solar production is detected, the new charging options will automatically appear in the app. No additional hardware is required if Zaptec Sense is already installed and measuring solar production.

More control over costs and capacity

Zaptec Sense also helps users manage energy costs more consciously. By intelligently adjusting the charging power to current consumption, expensive peak usage can be reduced. Zaptec Sense is also available in two versions. The Zaptec Sense P1 is suitable for installations with a smart meter that has a compatible P1 port. If no smart meter is available, the Zaptec Sense Generic can be used. This version is combined with an energy meter to measure energy consumption.

With Zaptec Sense, you can charge electric vehicles safely, efficiently, and with the future in mind, without putting unnecessary strain on the electrical installation.
